Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell immediately shot down Trump’s call for Republicans to use the nuclear option to kill the 60 vote rule and end the government shutdown.
Trump tweeted:
Great to see how hard Republicans are fighting for our Military and Safety at the Border. The Dems just want illegal immigrants to pour into our nation unchecked. If stalemate continues, Republicans should go to 51% (Nuclear Option) and vote on real, long term budget, no C.R.’s!

McConnell’s spokesperson said that Senate Republicans oppose ending the 60 vote rule, “The Republican Conference opposes changing the rules on legislation.”
Trump’s suggestion was stupid and shortsighted. Republicans could lose the Senate in 2018. If McConnell got rid of the 60 vote rule, it would position Democrats to do the same as soon as they take back the majority in the Senate.
The President has been whining about the 60 vote rule since he took office, but Trump continues to fail at basic math. Republicans don’t have 51 votes to end the government shutdown in the Senate. If McConnell tried to end the shutdown with only Republican support and failed, it would be a humiliating defeat that would place the blame solely on the Republican Party.
Trump is completely clueless. He thinks that he can use the government shutdown that he caused to end the 60 vote rule. It isn’t going to happen. McConnell is never going to end the 60 vote rule because today’s Senate majority could be next year’s Senate minority.
The Senate isn’t going to bail Trump out with a rules change.
The government shutdown will only end when Trump makes and sticks to a deal with Democrats.
