Hours before Donald Trump is due to take the oath of office law enforcement is investigating intercepted communications and financial transactions potentially between Trump world and Russia.
The New York Times reported:
American law enforcement and intelligence agencies are examining intercepted communications and financial transactions as part of a broad investigation into possible links between Russian officials and associates of President-elect Donald J. Trump, including his former campaign chairman Paul Manafort, current and former senior American officials said.
The continuing counterintelligence investigation means that Mr. Trump will take the oath of office on Friday with his associates under investigation and after the intelligence agencies concluded that the Russian government had worked to help elect him. As president, Mr. Trump will oversee those agencies and have the authority to redirect or stop at least some of these efforts.
The Times added that it is uncertain whether the communications and financial transactions directly involve Trump or members of his campaign.
However, the idea that the president-elect is hours away from taking office and he/his campaign is the focus of a law enforcement investigation is the reason why so many Americans have doubts about the legitimacy of his presidency.
Donald Trump’s entanglements with Russia are what the Founding Fathers warned the American people about. A foreign power meddled with a US presidential election, and the winning candidate appears to be doing his best to hide, distract from and downplay their involvement.
Never has a president assumed office under such a thick cloud of scandal. Trump can try to squash the investigations from within, but they will continue, and eventually the truth will be revealed.
The scrutiny is going to increase once Trump takes office, and seeds may already have been planted for the destruction of his presidency.
