Hillary Clinton set Trump up with her deplorables comment. The Republican nominee took the bait and is now destroying himself by defending racists.
After Clinton said at a New York fundraiser, “To just be grossly generalistic, you could put half of Trump’s supporters into what I call the ‘basket of deplorables,'” the natural persecution complex of the far right kicked in, and the Trump campaign thought they had a gaffe to seize on.
There was much talk of deplorables being Clinton’s “47% moment,” and Trump immediately demanded an apology from Clinton to his supporters.
What the Republican nominee’s campaign never saw coming was that Clinton’s remark was an attempt to shift attention onto the white nationalist and racist elements that are supporting Donald Trump.
Hillary Clinton’s campaign did something that no Republican was able to do to Trump during the primaries.
She has put Trump on the defensive. Donald Trump was able to waltz through the GOP primary because he was able to stay on offense. His constantly unpredictable attacks left his Republican rivals a step behind. Clinton has flipped the script in a way that many initially misunderstood A Donald Trump who is demanding an apology is a weakened opponent.
Everyone who isn’t Trump and Pence saw the next step coming a mile away.
While being interviewed by Wolf Blitzer on CNN, Pence was asked if former KKK leader and Trump supporter David Duke was a deplorable. His answer was a disaster. Pence said, “No. I’m not in the name calling business, Wolf. You know me better than that.”
The correct answer there was yes. KKK members and racists are deplorable.
Clinton has demonstrated that what she has said throughout the presidential campaign is true. Trump is easy to bait. A more experienced campaign led by a rational candidate would have seen the trap coming a mile away, but Trump and his team aren’t “the best people.”
Trump is back to defending his racist and bigoted supporters, and in the process destroying his campaign.
While at the same time, Hillary Clinton is proving herself to be an expert in ninja politics.
