After his claims that Bill Clinton’s history makes Hillary Clinton unfit to be president fell flat, Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) is now claiming that Benghazi makes Hillary Clinton unfit to be president.
According to The Hill, Sen. Paul told the Iowa Republican convention:
Paul said Clinton’s biggest “dereliction” was to have never read the diplomatic cables from Ambassador Christopher Stevens, who was killed in the attack, providing updates for the on-the-ground situation in Libya.
“She never read them. It’s a dereliction of duty. It’s something that should preclude Hillary Clinton from every being considered as commander in chief.”
….
“The debacle in Benghazi started in the very beginning at the very top with Hillary Clinton deciding that the Benghazi consulate was more like Paris than it was Baghdad. It was a war zone and it was a mistake from the very beginning to have nobody protecting that consulate.”
Sen. Paul’s use of the Lewinsky scandal to bring down Hillary Clinton landed with a thud, so the Kentucky senator is toeing the Republican company line that Benghazi disqualifies Clinton from ever being president. Rand Paul’s Benghazi comments might make Republican audiences stand and cheer, but they aren’t going to beat Hillary Clinton in the fall. Paul consistently trails Clinton by double digits in the very early polling. He and the other Republican 2016 wannabes seem utterly clueless as to how to deal with Hillary Clinton.
It is telling that instead of trying to engage Clinton on the issues, Rand Paul is dreaming up reasons why Hillary Clinton must be disqualified from ever running for president. Rand Paul may win the Republican nomination, but his willingness to spout the party line on Benghazi illustrates the fact that beneath the Libertarian facade is just another Republican also-ran who is harboring severe presidential delusions.
